Help and guides
From light bulb moment to a box of books on your doormat. Boom.
Five stages take your project from a notebook idea to finished copies on your doorstep. Find your stage below and you'll see what to decide, what to tick off before moving on, and the one guide worth opening first.
You explore stages one and two at your own pace. From stage three, Harriet and Mike are on hand.
New to print? Start at stage one.Got a finished PDF? Skip to stage four.
Prefer to watch? Here's the whole journey in a minute and a half, with Mike on camera and the press in full flow.
You've designed and finished your book and now you're thinking, right, what do I actually do next? Welcome to Ex Why Zed! We specialise in book and booklet printing. We make the print journey easy for designers, self publishers and indie authors. Getting started, there are three decisions to make.
Get inspiredYours to explore
The quickest way to know what you want is to see it printed. Our portfolio is full of real jobs we've made for people just like you, filed by format, and most carry a short spec box under the photos.
Save two or three that feel close to yours and paste the links into your quote request. A finished book we've already made tells us more about size, paper and feel than a page of description, and it gets you a more accurate price.
The light bulb jumped out as a great graphic icon which neatly summed up that pop in the customer's head as they first imagined the potential print project. That inspirational moment we all get as creatives, where it all clicks mentally.

Choose your optionsYours to explore
Every book comes down to three choices: binding, size and paper. Settle the binding first, because your page count has most of the say.
Mike covers what each binding feels like in the clip below. The numbers are the bit to hold onto: staples go as low as 8 pages and as high as 72 (a sheet folds to four pages, so the count climbs in fours), perfect binding wants 32 pages and a hardback case wants 28 inside pages. Land between 32 and 72 and all three are open to you, which is exactly when having the real papers on your desk pays off.
Standard sizes keep the price down: A5, A4 portrait and 210mm square are the cheapest to print. On paper, silk suits most books, gloss gives photographs their deepest colour, and uncoated feels warm and takes a pencil well.
Firstly, binding style. Stapled is brilliant for booklets up to 72 pages and your pages will open completely flat. Perfect bound gives you a square spine and a really professional soft back feel. And if it's a premium keepsake book, hardback is the winner.

Printing 20 copies or fewer? Our instant calculator shows a live price that updates with every choice, so you can test a different paper or page count in seconds. For bigger runs, the quote form takes about half a minute to fill in, and a real person prices it. Send it between 9am and 5pm on a weekday and the price usually reaches you within a couple of hours. Evening and weekend requests are first in the queue the next working morning.
Ask for two quantities while you're there. Per copy, a run of 250 can cost far less than a run of 50, so the second figure often changes the plan. And because there's no minimum order, one copy can arrive first for you to check.
We're always here to help, just give us a call, drop us an email or ask for a zoom, if you're feeling exotic.
As shown in our menu. Your quote confirms the exact figure.
Set up your artworkWe're with you
Send us a single PDF, sized to the finished page, with the pages running in reading order and images at roughly 300dpi. For perfect binding and hardbacks, add a separate cover file: back, spine and front laid out as one spread.
Any colour or photo running off the page needs 3mm of bleed. Books are trimmed in stacks, and that extra sliver of background is what stops a hairline of white paper showing after the cut. If your design keeps a white margin all round, you can skip it.
Unsure? Send it as it is. Before any job reaches a press, one of us opens the file and checks the bleed, the order of the pages, the spine width and every image, free of charge. Often we'll fix the bleed or rebuild the cover ourselves.
Now the key bit. Send us a print ready PDF with three millimetre extra artwork on each edge to help with trimming and the pages in reading order from cover to cover.
Order, proof, deliveryWe're with you
From here it's mostly our job. There are four moments, and only the first two need anything from you.
Our favourite part of any job is an email we get from the client when their job's been delivered to say thank you and how happy they are. That is what makes us tick.
WeTransfer is the easiest route: it's free and needs no account. Dropbox, a Google Drive link or a plain email (attachments up to 10MB) all work too. Address it to hello@exwhyzed.com and tell us four things: your print choices, how many copies, the date you need them and where they're going. Once the file passes its check, an invoice follows by email. Pay by card or bank transfer and your job is booked in.
Order 21 copies or more, or any hardback, and a PDF proof lands in your inbox first. Read every page, check they run in the right order and confirm the quantity, then sign it off. Nothing is fixed until you do. Smaller runs of stapled or perfect bound books skip the proof and print once your file has passed our check.
Working days, counted from your approval
Free tracked delivery to a single UK address is included. Working to a launch, a fair or a hand in? Mention the date in your quote request and we'll schedule the job to meet it.
Hardback timings assume a digital run under 500 copies. Litho, section sewn or premium covers need longer, so ask.
Open the boxes, then show it off: tag @exwhyzedprint and we'll share it. Your artwork stays with us, so ordering more later takes one email.
