What do you digest first β the photograph or the text? Solivagants: photographs + fictions by Paul Treacy answers that question differently on every page. Each spread presents one of Paul's atmospheric street photographs above a piece of creative writing β a story that the image makes possible. They exist in dialogue rather than hierarchy.
The smooth matt laminated cover entices the reader in before a single word is read. A silhouette walking away from the camera, amber and orange light flooding a rain-wet alley. The script title Solivagants floats above. It's a cover that promises a world worth entering β and the book delivers.
Solivagants is a self-published photography and fiction book documenting Paul Treacy's street photography alongside original prose β stories written to accompany images taken across European cities. A solivagant, by definition, is one who wanders alone. Browse our photography book printing service for examples of what's achievable.
The 250gsm silk cover with matt lamination is the right call for a photography book that wants to feel premium without being flashy. The lamination gives the cover a velvety surface β smooth to handle, resistant to fingerprints, entirely suited to a book shown at a photography fair.
Inside, 130gsm silk handles Paul's photography well. Street photography involves a broad tonal range β shadow, skin, daylight, artificial light β and silk at this weight gives clean, consistent results. The 4mm spine at 58pp is trim and considered.
Paul's design system is consistent: one photograph at the top of each page, creative writing below. The rhythm creates a reading pattern that feels meditative. The chapter titles β "ghost", "muse", "demon", "jogger", "associates" β are written in a distinctive handwritten italic, red on white, which gives the book a journal quality.
Paul came to us with a deadline that we'd typically describe as extremely tight: installation day for Photo London was 12th May, and he sent files on 6th May. Six days, including a bank holiday weekend. His files needed one adjustment β single pages rather than spreads for the inside β and Paul turned this around within hours.
His email about the project: "I trained as a graphic designer before I studied photography. However, I have broken so many design rules with this thing. But I wanted to play with the concept so to hell with rules." On the morning of delivery: "I'm fierce excited to see them. Thank you."
"I'm part of a collective of 80 published photographers... This is only my second project with you guys but last time it was seamless and the print quality was gorgeous. I will promote Ex Why Zed in our group." β Paul Treacy
Photo London has a hard install date. When Paul arrived with a 6-day window, we moved the project through as quickly as the production schedule allowed β file review, invoice, proof, print, dispatch. Our self-published book printing service handles tight deadlines as a matter of course.
Photograph and text can coexist as equals. Solivagants uses text as a parallel narrative that changes how you see the photograph. If you're a photographer who also writes, consider giving your words the same deliberate placement you give your images.
Matt lamination on silk is a winning combination. The matt surface is touchable and premium; the silk substrate gives your cover photography sharp, clean colour.
130gsm silk handles the full photographic spectrum. Street photography moves from deep shadows to bright daylight, and 130gsm silk reproduces that range cleanly.
A tight deadline is manageable if you communicate early. Six days from files to delivery is tight. It works if both sides respond fast and the files are clean.
