In 2017, the Fine Art students at Birmingham City University (BCU) showcased their talent and creativity in a stunning degree show exhibition. The event was a culmination of their hard work and dedication, and it was only fitting that their projects were presented in a high-quality, professionally printed catalogue. The collaboration between BCU and Ex Why Zed was a unique one. The students were given the opportunity to have their work featured in a professionally printed catalogue, aptly named “Parataxis. This catalogue was not just a collection of images and descriptions; it was a tangible representation of the students’ journey through their course, a testament to their growth as artists, and a preview of the future of fine art.
The catalogue was printed and delivered in just 5 days on our HP Indigo press, showcasing Ex Why Zed’s commitment to efficiency and quality. It was shipped to Birmingham in time for the final graduate show and prestigious public opening. The cover was made from GF Smith Colorplan, adding a touch of elegance and durability to the catalogue.
The catalogue was a 240x170mm book, perfect bound and easy to flip through. The 4-page cover was printed onto 270gsm Colorplan Real Grey, with a black print to the outer and a gloss spot UV varnish to give it a sleek finish. The 120-page text was printed onto 120gsm uncoated paper, with a four-colour print throughout. These specifications ensured that the catalogue was not only visually appealing but also sturdy and durable.
The catalogue was a hit at the degree show, with many praising its high-quality print and professional feel. It allowed the students’ work to be showcased in the best possible light, reflecting the high standards of BCU’s Fine Art course. The catalogue also served as a great marketing tool for the university, attracting prospective students and impressing industry professionals.

Birmingham School of Art’s MA Exhibition, Margaret, features work from over 50 artists, designers and educators from the UK and around the world. The exhibition features work of both full-time and part-time graduating students, alongside part-time first year students; exhibiting at a critical point mid-way through their journey with us.
The work produced over the year has been developed through a commitment to group discussion, the sharing of ideas and a vast amount of personal research. The interdisciplinary nature of the Postgraduate Programmes at Birmingham School of Art allows for an integration of theory and practice across a broad range of disciplines, reflected in this year’s exhibition.
This year the School will be joined by the School of Jewellery, further extending the potential of dialogue between practices, languages and craft.
