David Smalley is a Harrogate-based photographer with a mission to capture meaningful moments. His work is a testament to the power of photography to tell stories, evoke emotions, and bring people closer together.
Smalley's project, "A Portrait of Isolation," is a poignant depiction of the first days of the Covid-19 lockdown. In an age where we remember our lives through the pages of a smartphone picture library, this project was conceived to create a physical artefact of the time, a reminder of the people and places affected by the pandemic.
When it came to bringing this project to life, Smalley turned to Ex Why Zed, a leading name in the UK for hardback photography printing. Known for their commitment to quality and creativity, Ex Why Zed was the perfect match for this project.
The book was printed as an A4 Case Bound Book, a popular choice for hardback photography printing. The cover was printed onto 170gsm Silk and wrapped over a greyboard case, providing a sturdy and durable exterior. The outer cover was then matt laminated, adding a smooth finish that enhances the overall look and feel of the book.
The book included 2x 4pp End Papers printed onto Wibalin Natural, providing a stark contrast to the 64 inside pages printed onto 150gsm Silk. The inside pages were printed in four colour print throughout, allowing Smalley's photographs to truly shine. The book was then trimmed, collated, and section sewn, resulting in a high-quality product that is as robust as it is aesthetically pleasing.
"A Portrait of Isolation" is a testament to the quality of hardback photography printing provided by Ex Why Zed. The finished book is not just a collection of photographs; it is a work of art that showcases Smalley's talent and Ex Why Zed's commitment to quality printing.
This project adds to the growing portfolio of Ex Why Zed, which includes a variety of other successful projects such as Shoreline by David Southern, Send Off Session Snowboarding Hardback Photobook, and Bohemia Willem Jaspert Hardback Photography Book, among others.
Our commitment to photography book printing extends beyond "A Portrait of Isolation." Our portfolio is a testament to our client's vision and talent.
One such project is the Send Off Session Snowboarding Hardback Photobook. This photobook captures the thrill and excitement of snowboarding, with each page serving as a window into the world of this exhilarating sport. The hardback photobook format, with its robust and durable design, ensures that these memories can be cherished for years to come.
Another noteworthy project is Bohemia by Willem Jaspert. This hardback photography book showcases Jaspert's unique perspective on Bohemia, with each photograph telling a story. The quality of the print allows the viewer to fully immerse themselves in Jaspert's vision, making it feel as if they are exploring Bohemia alongside the photographer.
Ex Why Zed's attentive nature in hardback book printing is also evident in Primitive British Goat by Jack Mifflin. This project is a testament to Mifflin's passion for the Primitive British Goat, with the hardback book serving as a tribute to this unique breed. The high-quality print allows the reader to appreciate the beauty of these goats, making it feel as if they are right there on the farm.
The Croydon Up Close by Lambros McKenzie project is a fine example of a Final Major Project printing. This book offers a unique perspective on Croydon, with McKenzie's photographs capturing the essence of this vibrant area. The hardback format ensures that these images can be appreciated for years to come.
2009-2019: A Decade in Music Photography by Josh Jordan is a project which showcases Josh's talent for capturing the energy and excitement of live music. The hardback book format allows these moments to be preserved, serving as a testament to a decade of music.
The Living Lockdown by Sean McDonnell project is a poignant depiction of life during lockdown in London. McDonnell's photographs capture the range of emotions experienced during this unprecedented time, with the soft back book serving as a reminder of our resilience whilst raising money for a local Ealing charity.
Finally, the Don't You Forget About Me Zines project showcases Ex Why Zed's wire stitched zine capabilities. These zines are a tongue in cheek reminder of the speed which everyone abandoned their offices during the 2020 lockdown.
