You've put the time in. The layout's right. The photography's strong. The last thing you want is a printer that lets down the finished result.
Newcastle has a genuinely creative community, comprising art students at Northumbria and Newcastle University, independent photographers, zine makers, community publishers, and small arts collectives that produce work deserving of proper attention.
If you've been searching for magazine printing near me or wondering whether to trek into the Newcastle city centre to find a local print shop, here's the honest answer: most local shops aren't set up for short-run creative publishing. They're geared towards business stationery and bulk runs. And the big faceless online printers? You're lucky to speak to anyone if something goes wrong.
However, at Ex Why Zed, we specialise in exactly this kind of work. We've been printing for creative individuals since 2006, and we've built our entire service around independent publishers, artists, and first-time creators.
We're one of the leading names in UK magazine printing, trusted by indie publishers, photographers, and arts organisations from Newcastle to London and everywhere in between.

Want to understand how your magazine turns from a digital file into a professional final product?
This video walks you through each stage, from preparing your print-ready single PDF to digital printing, binding, and finishing. You’ll see how paper choices, colour accuracy, and binding methods all come together to shape the final result, helping you make better decisions and avoid costly mistakes before you go to print.
Paper is one of those decisions that sounds technical but actually makes a huge difference to how your magazine feels in someone's hands. Here's how to think about it.
Most magazines use a heavier stock for the cover, typically 300gsm to 350gsm silk. We'd usually recommend adding matt or gloss lamination to the outside. It protects the surface, makes colours pop, and gives the whole thing a more finished feel.
If you're after the best glossy magazine printing results, a 350gsm silk cover with gloss lamination is the combination most of our clients go back to.
For inside pages, we offer a range from 90gsm to 170gsm. The most popular choices for magazines are 115gsm and 130gsm: they give a good quality feel without the bulk or cost of heavier stock.
You can choose from:
We can print magazines from 8 to 200 pages, including a 4-page cover. Popular sizes include A4, A5, 210x210mm square, and custom sizes up to A3 portrait.

The binding you choose affects how your magazine looks on a shelf, how it feels to flip through, and how long it holds together. We offer two main options for magazine printing:
Sheets are folded and secured with two staples through the spine. It's the traditional magazine format: lightweight, cost-effective, and the pages open completely flat.
Works best for magazines up to around 40 pages. Turnaround is typically 3 to 4 working days.
Pages are stacked, trimmed, and glued into a wraparound cover with a square spine. It gives your magazine a proper book-like finish, with room to print a title on the spine.
We'd recommend perfect binding for 40 pages or more. Turnaround is usually 4 to 5 working days.

Never used a professional printer before? No bother. Here's the whole process from start to finish:
Most magazine orders are with you within 3 to 5 working days. If you've got a tighter deadline, drop us a message, or email us at hello@exwhyzed.com, and we'll see what we can do.
Magazine printing prices depend on a few key details, from the number of pages and paper weights to binding style and quantity. Whether you’re producing custom magazine printing for a short run or a larger batch, each choice shapes the final cost and quality.
