“No Hands” is a testament to the power of photography and the passion for football. This stunning hardback, coffee table art book is the brainchild of Ryu Voelkel, a professional photographer with a keen eye for capturing the spirit of the game. The book tells the visual story of the 2014 and 2018 football World Cups, immersing readers in the heart of the action, the triumphs, and the heartbreaks.
The printing process for “No Hands” was a meticulous endeavour, a testament to the commitment to quality at Ex Why Zed. The book was printed as a 280x215mm case bound book, with the cover printed onto 170gsm Gloss. The cover was then wrapped over a greyboard case, with anti-scratch lamination and foiling applied to the outer. The inside pages were printed onto 170gsm Gloss, with four colour print throughout. The pages were then trimmed, collated, and case bound, resulting in a high-quality, durable, and visually stunning product.
“No Hands” takes readers on a journey around the world, from the vibrant stadiums of Brazil to the heart of Russia. Voelkel’s photography captures not only the action on the pitch but also the subtle details and moments that encapsulate the spirit of the beautiful game. The book was successfully funded using Kickstarter, with 286 backers pledging €28,078, demonstrating the global appeal of Voelkel’s work and the universal love for football.

Voelkel’s unique perspective sets “No Hands” apart from other football photography books. His approach to capturing the moment, as shared on his Twitter, involves creating images that are context-free. This approach allows the viewer to immerse themselves in the moment, experiencing the emotion and intensity of the game without the need for additional context.
No Hands 1 and No Hands 2 form a stunning double compendium, hardback book collection.
No Hands 2: Ryu says “A 2018 World Cup Book is a football photography book like no other. In this book I will tell my unique story of the World Cup—combining the highlights and drama of a special tournament with the subtler details and moments that capture the spirit of the beautiful game.”
