Omega Black is a punchy spy-thriller comic from Zach Cahill that channels classic pulp paperbacks and late-night VHS sleeves. Zach wanted a compact, custom-size graphic novel that felt like a lost artefact from a 70s spinner rack, but printed with modern precision. We produced a 230 x 165mm, perfect bound book on FSC certified uncoated stocks, with a textured, laminated cover and a black-ink interior that crackles with energy on every page.
Omega Black: Threat Level Ultra is an action-heavy spy story packed with gadgets, double-crosses and glamorous chaos. Inside, Zach’s panels bounce between London, Monaco and mid-air explosions, with bold characters and expressive linework driving the pace.
The book reads like a love letter to pulp espionage – sharp dialogue in hand-lettered balloons, daring splash panels, and a constant sense that something is about to blow up. The compact format makes it easy to throw in a bag, yet there’s enough page count across the 64 pages for the story to build to a satisfyingly loud finale.

To match the pulp-inspired aesthetic, Omega Black is printed on uncoated paper throughout. The cover uses a sturdy 250gsm uncoated FSC certified stock with matt lamination on the outside, giving it that tactile, slightly toothy feel while still being protected from scuffs in backpacks and at convention tables.
Inside, 90gsm uncoated FSC pages keep the book light in the hand and reinforce the zine-like, photocopied vibe Zach leans into with his halftone textures. The 4mm square spine and perfect binding give the comic a collected-edition feel, so it stacks neatly on a shelf alongside trade paperbacks as well as indie zines.
The cover is an immediate statement: a collage of neon yellow, hot pink and cool cyan characters locked in mid-fight, set against a grainy greyscale backdrop. Dot shading, overprinted flats and big type running vertically all nod to vintage exploitation posters, while the uncoated stock keeps everything feeling grounded and tactile rather than glossy.
Inside, Zach commits to a black-ink look with rich greys and halftone screens doing most of the heavy lifting. Each page carries a dense grid of panels, but a subtle grey background tone across the paper pulls the spreads together, so the reader’s eye isn’t jarred by contrast. Larger panels and full-width sound effects – KA-BLOOSH!!!, WHACK!, BOOM – punctuate the story, giving big beats room to breathe and ensuring important moments land hard.
There’s a lot happening on each spread: shifting locations, cast changes, explosions, car chases and nightclub sequences. The consistent black-only artwork on the warm uncoated stock keeps everything coherent, even when Zach pushes into high-energy, crowded pages.
Chapter openings reset the pace with generous white space, bold titles and single images that tee up the next sequence. Towards the end of the book, a playful final panel with a character peeking through the page edge – complete with Zach’s social handle – adds a wink to the reader and invites them to track down more of his work.
Omega Black arrived with a clear spec: custom 230 x 165mm size, perfect bound, and printed on uncoated paper to echo classic newsprint comics rather than slick modern monthlies. Our job was to turn Zach’s finished files into a robust, convention-ready book that preserved the nuance in his greys and halftones.
Behind the scenes, our production team ensured the dot patterns held their character on the chosen 90gsm uncoated stock and that solid blacks stayed punchy without flooding. The cover artwork, with its layered collage and overprint effects, was set up for four-colour process on uncoated stock and then wrapped in matt lamination so readers get both texture and durability.
