A fascinating ongoing project by @davidcass.art is supported by this impressive Art Book Where Once The Waters.

The book is a set of graphic photographic captures of the written letters and antique metal tins that form the project.

The two polyptychs first presented during Cass’ Venice Biennale exhibition illustrate our changing sea. While the 365 metal tins presented on one wall could be the painted snapshot of a year at sea, the wall opposite explores a longer timeframe, telling us by how much the seas nearest our birthplaces have risen during our lifetimes.

Now comprising over 600 typed letters, the principal artwork speaks of coastlines retreating, eroding, sinking and even lifting, offering figures (measurements) we can visualise, often because the level of change described might be contained within the sheet of paper the letter is typed upon. Knowing what is happening at coastlines we are connected to allows us to engage with a topic so often shrouded in complex science, or average global figures not specific to any one place.

The front cover onto the character-packed Neenah Environment from @gfsmithpapers tips its head towards reclaimed wood you might well find on a beach. The oversize white foiling adorning the cover creates an intriguing contrast. Neenah Birch also appears in the centre of the book making for a distinctive tactile section.
