The “Nepal Photo Journal” by Will Elsom is more than just a photobook. It’s a time capsule, capturing the essence of the Upper Mustang region of Nepal at a pivotal moment in its history. This travel journal photobook is a testament to the power of photography to immortalise moments in time and the human experience.
In 2018, Will Elsom, an Oxford-based photographer, embarked on a journey to the Upper Mustang area of Nepal. This region, culturally and ethnically Tibetan, was on the cusp of significant change due to development and modernisation. Will’s journey through this beautifully remote and vast region resulted in the creation of the “Nepal Photo Journal”, a stunning collection of images that document a way of life on the brink of transformation.
The “Nepal Photo Journal” was brought to life by Ex Why Zed, an independent book print company known for its high-quality photobook printing. The photobook was printed as 210x168mm booklets, with a 4pp cover onto 300gsm uncoated and 60pp text onto 120gsm uncoated. The full-colour print throughout was then trimmed, collated, and perfect bound, resulting in a beautiful, tactile product that does justice to the stunning photography it contains. Push the boundaries like Will did and challenge us to print a custom travel journal size.
The “Nepal Photo Journal” serves as a reminder of the power of photography to record and immortalise. While the changes facing Mustang in the long run are yet unknown, the collective identity of this remote community is forever present in Will’s imagery. The photobook inspires readers to consider our own environment as we are all very much a product of it.
