In this showcase snippet video, we enjoy looking through a hardback photography book from Michal Augustini. ‘First Three, No Flash’ is a collection of iconic moments from live shows.

The printed paper is stacked in many sheets and our guillotine trims off the bleed and excess white paper. The sheet is then turned and the same process is completed on all four edges leaving the sheet the actual size of your finished book.

We were asked, “can you bind two booklets within one cover?”. After some head-scratching, beard stroking and using our brains…we came up with the solution!

Interested in what the process is of case binding a printed hardback book?

Well, we have compiled a video step-by-step guide to show you the technical process involved and to help you gain an understanding on what decisions you can make to improve the appearance of your next book.

Hardback Book Page Order

This forms a very informational helping hand when you come to decide if you would like printed or plain end-papers because you can see exactly where they are positioned in relation to the cover ad text block of the book.

Front Cover (choose from 170gsm Silk with Matt or Gloss Lamination or one of the cover materials from Winter&Co)
End paper left – glued to the inside front cover (170gsm uncoated)
End paper right (170gsm uncoated)
Reverse end paper left (170gsm uncoated)
First right hand ‘inside’ page – page 1 of your text page PDF. Choose from Silk, Gloss or Uncoated, 115gsm > 170gsm thickness.
Double page spread formed by pages 2 and 3 in your inside page PDF.
4 and 5 make a spread, 6 and 7, 8 and 9 etc.

At the end of the book, the running order is:

Double page spread formed by the penultimate last two pages in your inside page PDF.
Last left hand ‘inside’ page – the last page of your text page PDF. Choose from Silk, Gloss or Uncoated, 115gsm > 170gsm thickness.
Front end paper right (170gsm uncoated)
End paper left (170gsm uncoated)
End paper right – glued to the inside back cover (170gsm uncoated)
Back Cover (choose from 170gsm Silk with Matt or Gloss Lamination or one of the cover materials from Winter&Co)

It showcases how the case itself is made, the options for cover materials including printing a cover from your bespoke artwork, choosing a paper from the GF Smith Colorplan range or using one of the Winter&Company book cover materials. We discuss the technical considerations of the covers, endpapers and binding.
