“The catalogue has been received by us and it looks great! Thank you so much to Harriet, you and the team for working on this — we will definitely use your company in the future!” — Oliver, Canterbury Christ Church University Photography
Some degree show catalogues look like they were printed because they had to be. Unfiltered is not one of those. The 2025 BA Photography graduating cohort at Canterbury Christ Church University arrived with a clear identity — raw, direct, design-led — and their catalogue holds that identity from cover to last page. Designed by Lucy Evans (@monsigneous), the opening graphic is immediately arresting: a deep navy field, concentric arc forms built from fine white ticks, and the word UNFILTERED in blocky capitals that earns the name rather than just wearing it.
What makes this project stand out is the consistency of its inner architecture. Each student receives a single spread: a bold rotated name header running vertically down the right-hand column, a project title and personal statement on the left, and photographs placed with confidence. Early on, student profile photographs ground the reader — a face for every name before the work begins.
We were delighted to support Oliver and his classmates through our step-by-step print journey, from early quoting conversations through to delivery in time for both their Canterbury degree show and their slot at the prestigious Free Range exhibition at The Truman Brewery on Brick Lane, London.
Inside, 120gsm uncoated sits in a sweet spot — smooth enough to let colour photography read well and warm tones sing, yet tactile enough that turning a page feels like an action rather than an afterthought. For our photography book printing service we always discuss paper feel as part of the creative brief, not just a technical spec.
Lucy Evans’s cover design deserves proper attention. The concentric arc motif — fine, evenly-spaced radial ticks arranged into overlapping circles — reads at once as a camera shutter, a sound waveform, and something more abstract. Against deep navy, the white linework holds its own without competing with the headline type. Inside, the consistent spread layout is the publication’s quiet masterstroke: vertical student name headers function as chapter dividers, photographs are given genuine breathing room, and the design keeps its own contribution minimal so the photography leads.
Oliver got in touch in February 2025, coordinating the project for nineteen classmates without institutional funding. Our account manager Harriet worked through several spec iterations — adjusting paper weights, comparing binding methods, and holding prices across a six-week window. When the files came in, she noticed the spine had been left blank and prepared three finished cover alternatives so Oliver could make an informed visual choice before going to print.
The finished catalogues were delivered to Canterbury Christ Church in time for the degree show, and headed to Free Range at The Truman Brewery shortly after. If you are pulling together your own cohort’s catalogue, our degree show catalogue printing service is a great starting point.
Perfect bind when your page count justifies it. At 100+ pages, a square spine gives your catalogue the authority it deserves. Uncoated stock flatters both colour and monochrome photography. It is not the obvious choice, but it is often the right one. Consistent layout is what makes a group catalogue cohere — give each student a clear grid rather than unlimited freedom, and the whole publication reads better. Check your spine. Whether it carries the cover colour, a graphic element, or title text, it should never be an afterthought.
