Central St Martins approached Ex Why Zed in early 2009 to print their Fine Art Catalogue. After a lively consultation period we ultimately decided that the finished product would be a catalogue that gave a nod towards old school Maths textbooks with Gold Embossing adding a lavish twist. With so many variables involved we made sure the students were happy at every juncture and by supplying sample papers, dummies and proofs it ensured the job matched their expectations and fell under budget.
The 1st show catalogues we printed and still probably one of our favourites is the 2009 Central Saint Martin’s Fine Art (which we are still printing today in 2023 :).
It’s likely there will be an overall theme or visual language behind your whole degree show show. The vehicle that dictated the style of the Central St Martins catalogue here was old school exercise books. that’s what they really wanted them to look like and came up with an incredibly simple design but so effective with the three lines across the front cover the gold foiled. So if you remember back to maths in the maths at primary school have these kind of really kitsch looking exercise books and that’s the look they want to go for.
Flipping it over onto the back cover are you can see that they went for the tables with the maths calculations on there in the scientific numbers it’s really really cool.
The course tutor said this set a new benchmark for catalogue design from Central St Martin‘s which when you consider the college has been going for decades that’s quite an accolade for the students.
They went for an off white front cover. The actual card they used for the front covers isn’t available any more but I’m sure we can get something similar for you and then we’ve got gold foiling over the top.
“Catalogues arrived, they look so amazing, responses have been really great, one tutor said it was intelligent and a benchmark for future catalogue design and they all said it was the best catalogue they had seen from St Martins so just wanted to say thanks for all your help and for arranging everything.
Really hope i will get to work with exwhyzed again in the future, it’s been a real pleasure. Thanks again”
