Printing winning creative projects

We have been doing this a while now and have seen a lot of impressive publications come off our presses.  To give you a head start with your newsletters printing, here are three print specifications which work well.  Each has its own characteristics which have proven to be winning combinations from a production perspective, cost per unit and most importantly, have reader appeal.

If any of our showcase options would work for your project, take a note of the spec and jump on our Project Builder to receive your bespoke quotation. Or ping us an email on hello@exwhyzed.com if that is easier.

Showcase 1 – a stereotypical A5 stapled newsletter:
A5 Stapled Books
32pp Self Cover onto 130gsm Silk
Four colour print throughout
As a guide, you could print 1000 copies of this for £170.

Showcase 2 – a compact, professional newsletter:
A5 Perfect Bound Books
4pp Cover onto 300gsm Silk
Matt Lamination to outer
36pp Text onto 130gsm Silk
Four colour print throughout
As a guide, you could print 100 copies of this for £210.

Showcase 3 – a content filled A4 solution:

4pp Cover onto 300gsm Silk
Matt Lamination to outer
100pp Text onto 130gsm Silk

As a guide, you could print 100 copies of this for £786.

Tweaks you could consider…

• Switching to gloss lamination for a shiny aesthetic.
• Increase the size to A5 to save you money and make the publication more ergonomic.
• OR increase to A4 for a larger area of content.
• Increase the weight of the inside pages to 170gsm making it more substantial and impressive for the reader.
• Pick out some content on the cover for Spot UV varnishing to draw attention and make it shine (this is an additional £280).

The complete glossary of newsletter printing

We have done our best to give you a huge wealth of information on this page and in our guides but if here are some frequently asked questions to help you get your work into print.

Any questions, do give us a shout, remember we are here to help on email, phone and live chat.

View all our FAQ's
How many pages can I print?

Each sheet in your wire stitched newsletter forms 4 pages when it’s bound. Therefore when designing your booklet, remember to make sure that the total number of pages is a multiple of 4.

Do I need to supply 3mm bleed?

Always supply files with 3mm bleed on each edge, this is even more important for newsletters because of the ‘drift’ that occurs when binding – we don’t want you to lose any information.

Here is our clear, easy-to-follow video for adding bleed.

How long does it take?

We will aim to deliver the finished books in 4/5 working days after receiving your print-ready artwork.  If you are working to a crucial hand in deadline then we strongly advise leaving more time in case there are any artwork issues with your files or courier problems with delivery.

Additionally there can be a day or two of amends required to the artwork before it’s print ready which we’re more than happy to help with but you’ll need to factor that in to timings.

Remember, we’ll need a hi res pdf file with 3mm bleed and crop marks on each edge to go ahead please. Sending it over correctly first time means we can go straight to print. Do have a last check through our file set up guides to make sure all the boxes are ticked.

What paper can I print onto?

All of our papers are sustainable and at least FSC certified. Some are also 100% recycled.

We have three basic choices for paper type:
• Silk, Gloss, Matt or Uncoated finish
• 90-170gsm for inside pages
(90gsm is super thin like newsprint, 120/130gsm is what we print 99% of our zines onto, 160/170gsm is a bulky paper that will feel glorious when your reader is flicking through)
• 170-350gsm for a thicker card cover
We print the majority of our Newsletter’s inside pages onto either 120gsm uncoated or 130gsm silk. This is thick enough that images will not show through too much and feels quality.
If you’d like a thicker cover then go for a 300gsm stock.

Still not sure? Grab yourself one of our free printed sample packs to help you decide because we realise that choosing paper over the internet is like reading braille with gloves on. Just ping us an email with your address and we’ll know where to send it to.

What sizes do you print?

A4, A5, 210x210mm and A6 are most economic but you can push the boundaries and choose any bespoke size too! We can print up to A3 portrait (an imposing 420mm high x 297mm wide) and A4 landscape (210mm high x 297mm wide).

What are the choices for binding?

The Styling Hub of our Print Journey is packed with advice, guides and inspiration for binding choices.

Wire stitching is a little bit of print jargon for ‘stapling’. If you have an A5 booklet then we print it onto A4 sheets, fold them in and put staples along the left-hand edge to bind the sheet together. In some quarters, this is also known as ‘saddle stitching’. Let’s stick with stapling though if that’s easier 🙂

Perfect binding is a method of binding will give your publication a square spine and professional looking finish. For further advice follow our perfect binding set up guides.

Do I need cover lamination?

Matt Lamination works best with silk and uncoated covers. We would suggest using gloss lamination if you are aiming for a super shiny, high impact cover. Soft-touch has a velvet, illustrious feel but does attract finger marks REALLY quickly so best not eat your lunch before reading!

What is a page?

For the purposes of our quoting, we call a page one side of content.  So, a sheet of paper has two pages – a front and a back.  If you ask for a quote for 40 inside pages, that will be 40 pages of content, 40 pages in your artwork file / pdf and in the book 20 leaves printed on both sides.
